Subject: AH Challenge: Vice President Inouye Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 07:49:10 GMT From: "Brent McKee" Newsgroups: soc.history.what-if Senator Daniel Inouye happens to be one of my favourite politicians, dating back to his time on the Watergate Committee in 1974, and his later period on the Iran-Contra Committee in the 1980s. One incident I remember in particular in the latter case was a witness coming before the Committee and implying that Inouye was a coward (I believe that there was also a comment on Inouye's race). One of the other members of the Committee responded to that comment by mentioning the Senator's World War II heroism which cost him his arm (just last year he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war). All of which got me to thinking about how to get the Senator within a heart beat of the presidency. I mean the guy has a lot of qualifications that work in American politics: he's well known, he's photogenic, he's a legitimate war hero. Of course he's also got a couple of strikes against him: he's not a WASP, and he's from a state with little importance in the Electoral College -- Hawaii. Of course I doubt he'd accept if he were offered the place on the ticket. He doesn't strike me as the kind of man who would exchange the power of the United States Senate (particularly with his seniority) for "a pitcher of warm spit", but is it possible to set up a situation in which he can be elected Vice President. Oh yes, and he can't run with Jimmy Carter -- that's too easy! -- Brent McKee To reply by email, please remove the capital letters (S and N) from the email address "If we cease to judge this world, we may find ourselves, very quickly, in one which is infinitely worse." - Margaret Atwood -- Brent McKee To reply by email, please remove the capital letters (S and N) from the email address "If we cease to judge this world, we may find ourselves, very quickly, in one which is infinitely worse." - Margaret Atwood
