Subject: No Black Death Date: 30 Jun 2001 10:25:17 GMT From: kenney@cix.compulink.co.uk Organization: CIX - Compulink Information eXchange Newsgroups: soc.history.what-if European population seems to have peaked at about 1300. However by then it had entered a climatic downturn. There were famines in England in 1272,1277,1283,1292 and 1311. Between 1315 and 1319 almost every country in Europe lost the whole of at least one harvest. 1332 was another bad year and the period between 1345 and 1348 would have seemed uniquely unfortunate in any other century. (Ziegler, The Black Death) The arrival of the BD did a lot to ease pressure on food production. Now what if there was no BD? Here we have a Europe wide population that has run up against Maulthus. What is more the climatic change had reduced the amount of cultivatable land. Large areas of marginal land had been brought into production in the previous century. This became useless under the changing conditions. Thoughts? A Christendom that stretches from Portugal to the Urals by 1500 but is much less vibrant than in OTL.
